A Nationwide Reputation For Excellence
Our lawyers are recognized for their skill, knowledge and experience by colleagues throughout the nation. This is due in part to the relatively high number of trials they handle, the results they have achieved, and the prolific number of articles and briefs they have published. The articles are protected by copyright of the publisher, but we have printed excerpts for casual review. More serious study may require access to archives of the respective publishers. In the same vein, we have printed excerpts of briefs filed in various appellate courts. Briefs filed in federal courts can be accessed either through the courts’ PACER program or Westlaw, a paid subscription service which publishes selected briefs from various cases. A Google search of formal articles and briefs should use “John S. Furlong” as a search term.
Media Matters
In addition, attorney Jack Furlong has made regular appearances in the media – including network television, cable and radio broadcasts – to discuss contemporary legal issues as well as criminal trials involving public figures, particularly professional athletes. He spent five years under contract as a legal analyst for MSNBC, and another couple of years in the same capacity for NBC Sports Network. Many of these appearances may be accessed, either as transcripts or video or audio clips, in order to give prospective clients an opportunity to see how he interacts with other professionals and how he handles media-sensitive cases. Media relations have become an important tool in mounting a successful defense to criminal and civil charges. Most newspapers and cable television companies protect their transcripts. A Google search using the term “Jack Furlong” coupled with the word “lawyer” will reveal some of these transcripts. As a “legal analyst” for MSNBC, Jack Furlong also appeared on other NBC and CNBC programs, plus Court TV and Fox local and cable outlets. He is often asked to weigh in on legal controversies as a guest analyst for WFAN in New York.
Dedicated Service ◊ We Stand By Our Clients
Our relationships with our clients often span many years and many dimensions of legal representation. For example, serious white collar crimes often involve complex civil litigation, including forfeiture of assets, and administrative law (professional licensing, immigration status, etc.). A felony charge can take many years to reach a complete resolution.
Often times, prosecution is a war of attrition. We are keenly aware of the substantial costs associated with a competent defense, and we strive to contain those costs, consulting with our clients regularly to weigh expenses and their potential benefits. We approach each case with a focus on our clients’ needs and how best to meet them.
The Bottom Line
In criminal cases, we expect to win: To avoid indictment, or conviction or prison. We never offer to send clients to prison, and we stand ready to go to trial regardless of the charges. When we win, everyone goes home. But not every case goes our way, which is why we always have a plan B. We stand by our clients long after a judge or jury delivers a verdict. If you negotiate a prison sentence, we can continue to represent you until you are released and your interactions with the criminal justice system fully end.
In civil cases, we investigate each case using the skills we learned as prosecutors, preparing to prove a claim for damages, or to disprove an allegation without merit. We seek to maximize settlements for our plaintiffs and to minimize exposure for our defendants. We pride ourselves in being able to out-work, out-write and outwit our adversaries, regardless of the pedigrees we face.
